Trade Shows: Business Opportunity or Excuse to Go To Vegas

Small business retailers can still definitely benefit from attending trade shows. It seems like everyone is doing everything online but that face to face interaction – from the expert B2B speakers to the wholesalers taking orders at the booths – can really help you grow your business.

First off, go to your local online tradeshow directory to see what shows are coming up. A good directory will have links to the trade show web pages. Find the ones that deal with your industry and look over their information. Often there will be great speakers – people who have been in your shoes, know the ups and downs and want to share their knowledge. Don’t be surprised if they are selling a book or seminar to a workshop as well, still the free information can be a great boon.

e-Reader is Killing the Printed Star

The e-reader is still a booming seller in the technology department. It turns out we weren’t bored of books, we just can’t be taken away from a screen for very long. The market now rich with a variety of models from different companies, e-readers can be both affordable and rather prestigious. Sales continue to nearly triple annually, and we haven’t hit it’s peak yet. Market research suggests upwards of 26 million units will be sold this year alone, and will sell well next year.

You have no idea how much money your business has.

business quoteI have found that some small retail or wholesale business owners do not understand their own business’s cash flow.  Managing your cash flow is probably one of the most important tasks any owner or financial manager of a company can do.

There are some basic concepts of cash flow that need to be understood: Inflow – is the money that is coming into your company.  This is the actual payment from a sale, payment of an invoice, or even a money from a loan from a bank.  Read all of You have no idea how much money your business has.

Are We Really Posting About Color Schemes?

There is no doubt that color has a tremendous affect on how we feel, both mentally and physically. Most have people have colors that they believe they look good in and will wear few others. The “What Season Are You” method of dress that enjoyed some popularity during the 1980s was, at its heart, a color matching system. (Showing our age much?)

The question remains however, whether there is scientifically testable and so reproducible basis for the effects and appeal of coloring. While this may seem very abstract, it is of interest to retailers and wholesalers alike. It informs decisions regarding what kinds of stock to carry, advertising, interior, and web design, and even how we dress for business encounters.

There is Some Brighter Economic News, or Maybe Not

The economic outlook has had many wholesalers worried. The woes of yet another recession have been shadowing the B2B industry for months now since the official end of the last recession 2 years ago. It would be a nightmare if the economic forecast became worse. Wholesalers have increased their stock for 19 consecutive months. This braced the hard pressed American economy by adding .4% to the gross domestic product in the first quarter of the year. Interesting note: Over 30% of all business inventory in the United States is held by wholesalers. Which translates into over $450 billion dollars worth of goods. After a .6% rise in sales in June, July sales were flat – in fact the seasonally adjusted sales figures were just a bit over $396 billion dollars. Looking at the difference between the worth of the inventory and the sales figures will have even laymen worried. On top that problems caused by the horrific earthquakes in Japan interrupted the supply chain for parts in the electronics and automotive industries.

Fair Trade Can Mean a Fair Profit

business quoteWhen you hear the phrase “Fair Trade” most people inevitably think of coffee.  And there is a good reason for that … which I will get to. There is not a universally accepted definition for the term “Fair Trade”. Generally it means a trading partnership between developed and under developed countries that seeks better equality in international trade. This usually includes better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade.

It’s Time to Consider the Newsletter

business quoteIn the modern era the company office circular is more often a source of facetious humor rather than a useful provider of information. The same can be said for paper newsletters with it’s waste of paper and length of time in terms of production as well as delivery. But in this day and age where everyone has a Firefox tab of their e-mail open 24/7 the electronic newsletter has become a popular and rather useful form of advertising and information sharing. Not to mention the lack of expense for producing a mass newsletter online verses having to spend money on paper, ink, and postage for a regular snail-mail newsletter. Besides that an e-newsletter has the power to reach a far larger number of people immediately with little hassle for you.

It’s Not A Great Time for Selling Drop Side Cribs

Drop-side cribs have been popular for a long time due to the ease of access for parents. With a quick snap of a latch you can let your infant or toddler roam freely. Recently, however, it has come to the attention of The Consumer Products Safety Commission that drop-side cribs are a major safety hazard and multiple recalls have been occurring since 2009.
