It isn’t even Halloween yet but retailers and wholesalers alike look lovingly, wistfully, droolingly towards the green of the Christmas shopping season. Truly it is beginning to look alot like Christmas…. in your store aisles at least. Here are some of the hottest items out there (heads up retailers!) according to Toys R Us and elsewhere for your kids:
1. Legos. Yes they have been around forever (created by those crafty Dane back in the 1940s), but little boys … and some girls… look forward to getting the hottest Lego toys every holiday. This year’s Asian sci-fi / fantasy inspired Ninjago Lego series are the toys to keep an eye out for. A fantastic way to a quick sale is to pair one of the Ninjago sets with a discount or a freebie of a starter Lego set or an older (but still very popular) Star Wars Lego Set.

There is no doubt that color has a tremendous affect on how we feel, both mentally and physically. Most have people have colors that they believe they look good in and will wear few others. The “What Season Are You” method of dress that enjoyed some popularity during the 1980s was, at its heart, a color matching system. (Showing our age much?)
The question remains however, whether there is scientifically testable and so reproducible basis for the effects and appeal of coloring. While this may seem very abstract, it is of interest to retailers and wholesalers alike. It informs decisions regarding what kinds of stock to carry, advertising, interior, and web design, and even how we dress for business encounters.

From the deep South up to Alaska and Canada, hunting and fishing are sports that are passed down from one generation to the next. Human beings are wired to hunt. Hunters speak of their honest relationship they feel between themselves and nature. Hunting keeps alive the ideal of self-reliance. Hunting and fishing bonds families together in a ritual as old as human-kind. Additionally hunting promotes wildlife conservation. Over $100 billion dollars is spent every year in the United States on wild-life related recreational activities, bolstering our flagging economy with needed revenue.

Do you remember when Halloween was about children going out at night dressed as various spooks hoping to be rewarded with candy and offering a prank if they were not? Neither do we. These days Halloween is a holiday for young adults to get together and party wearing whatever costume strikes their fancy. Last year the hit movie Avatar swept the nation and costumes themed after it, including the obligatory “sexy” costume, became the biggest craze. However with the current economic climate has dampened fad costumes and 2011 has been short of hit sci-fi or action films for people to wish to emulate. Today’s consumer whishes for inexpensive alternative to purchasing a full costume.

Video game technology is constantly on the move both metaphorically speaking (the constant changes and developments in the market) as well as literally (the PlayStation 3’s answer to the Wii and XBOX 360’s Kinect known simply as “Move”). However, though home video game consoles’ star continues to rise, many major gaming retailers are saying that it’s time to say sayonara to hand-held video games. With lack luster sales for the PlayStation Portable, the old Nintendo DSLite sales staying slightly afloat, and the gimmicky 3DS performing poorly sings are not looking good for a market that once saved Nintendo from failure.

The economic outlook has had many wholesalers worried. The woes of yet another recession have been shadowing the B2B industry for months now since the official end of the last recession 2 years ago. It would be a nightmare if the economic forecast became worse. Wholesalers have increased their stock for 19 consecutive months. This braced the hard pressed American economy by adding .4% to the gross domestic product in the first quarter of the year. Interesting note: Over 30% of all business inventory in the United States is held by wholesalers. Which translates into over $450 billion dollars worth of goods. After a .6% rise in sales in June, July sales were flat – in fact the seasonally adjusted sales figures were just a bit over $396 billion dollars. Looking at the difference between the worth of the inventory and the sales figures will have even laymen worried. On top that problems caused by the horrific earthquakes in Japan interrupted the supply chain for parts in the electronics and automotive industries.

Modern Americans with their iPhones and their growing sense of entitlement have little time for discomfort any more. Though this is apparent in many ways. I believe that two clothing items represent it best: jeggings and Pajama Jeans. Jeggings are spandex pull-on leggings made to look like tight jeans. It’s skinny jeans that don’t require you to actually be skinny. Pajama Jeans are for the even lazier. Gotta go out in public don’t want to bother getting dressed? If you have Pajama Jeans on you can go out in public and fool people into believing you actually got changed that morning while enjoying the comforting feel of pajama pants.

Apparently athletes aren’t the only ones buying strange so-called “miracle” devices worn on the body. A very popular up and coming pet item is the Thundershirt Dog Anti-Stress Wrap. The Thundershirt is a slightly weighted tight body piece worn on a dogs stomach and chest. It’s manufacturers claim that the gentle pressure that the shirt applies to the dog’s stomach is so soothing that it will eliminate any stress or over excitement misbehavior. A miracle indeed if it actually works. With some reports claiming that the item not only doesn’t resolve the problem but actually amplifies it there is much to be questioned about the Thundershirt.
