The historic roots of the use of the flag lay in military history. Long before flags came to represent nations soldiers on the battlefield carried them for morale and communication purposes. The practice was eventually abandoned as too dangerous to the flags barer and better forms of battlefield communication developed. Now the military only uses flags on ceremonial occasions.
