Since the dawn of civilization humans have tried to mask the stench of sweat and filth with better smells. The roots of perfume and its close relative cologne are in ancient cities of the near east and the desires of the upper classes to free themselves of oppressive odors. They could either invent sewers and running water or simply hide bad smells with good ones. Our ancient forefathers were far more skilled at producing scented oils and smoke than decent sanitation.
